Rising costs are forcing many private tenants in Australia to leave their neighbourhoods.

Our research team at the University of Melbourne and Monash University is investigating how households piece together their lives and connections when they relocate.

A critical problem

Over one quarter of Australian households reside in privately rented homes. Rising rental costs are placing big financial strains on these households. Many are forced to move to more affordable housing options across suburbs, cities, or even regions. However, we don’t yet know enough about how these households rebuild their lives and connections after they relocate.

Helping renters

Our project is funded by the Australian Research Council and aims to help rental households by identifying the support requirements of tenants undergoing relocation and suggesting strategies to mitigate the adverse effects of moving and rebuilding their lives.

Benefitting communities

Our project aims to benefit communities by assessing how these relocations affect the demand for infrastructure, jobs and services in different areas.
